The M\u0101rka\u1e47\u1e0deya Pur\u0101\u1e47a (Chapter 2) narrates her birth story.<\/p>

The gods were at war with the demons Madhu and Kaitabh for hundreds of celestial years. Later, another demon, Mahishasura, defeated Indra, seized his throne, and cast all the gods out of heaven. Defeated and helpless, the gods went to Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva). They described their plight in detail and prayed for help.\u00a0Infuriated by this injustice, Vishnu released energy from his chakra. Brahma and Shiva also created tremendous energy\u2014first appearing as a vast, masculine, mountainous force, which then transformed into a divine feminine power. This goddess radiated brilliance equal to millions of suns, dazzling and blinding everything around.<\/p>

Her form was composed of the powers of the gods:<\/p>

Shiva\u2019s radiance formed her face.<\/p>

\u00a0Yama\u2019s strength gave her hair.<\/p>

\u00a0Vishnu\u2019s luster created her arms.<\/p>

\u00a0The Moon shaped her breasts.<\/p>

\u00a0Indra gave her waist.<\/p>

\u00a0Varuna formed her thighs and calves.<\/p>

\u00a0The Earth gave her hips.<\/p>

\u00a0Brahma shaped her feet.<\/p>

\u00a0The Sun gave her fingers and toes.<\/p>

\u00a0Prajapati gave her teeth and third eye.<\/p>

\u00a0Vayu formed her ears.<\/p>

The gods then armed her:<\/p>

\u00a0Shiva gave her part of his trident.<\/p>

\u00a0Vishnu gave her a piece of his chakra.<\/p>

\u00a0Himalaya gifted her a lion as her vehicle.<\/p>

\u00a0Varuna gave her a conch.<\/p>

Agni gave restoring divine order and the honor of the gods.<\/p>

Vayu offered bow and arrows.<\/p>

\u00a0Indra granted the power to strike.<\/p>

The Sun bestowed blinding brilliance.<\/p>

Other gods adorned her with jewelry and protective ornaments.<\/p>

When this supreme energy\u2014Goddess Bhagavati\u2014gave her victory cry, the heavens shook and the earth trembled. All the gods proclaimed her triumph.<\/p>

Mahishasura saw her and attacked. Devi, with a radiant smile, slaughtered his army. Her lion rampaged like fire in a forest, while the gods sounded their conches. Jagadamba crushed the demon hordes and ultimately destroyed both Madhu and Kaitabh,<\/p>
